What the voucher covers

If you receive a voucher and find a unit that meets PHA rules, you typically pay a share of rent based on income. The PHA pays the rest to the landlord up to its payment standard. The unit must pass a Housing Quality Standards inspection. Family size and bedroom rules apply. Public housing is a related but separate waitlist for PHA-owned units.

How to apply

Find PHAs that serve your area using HUD.gov and the PHA contact lists HUD publishes.
Read whether the waitlist is open. Closed lists do not take new applications.
Apply on the official PHA or regional portal the same day a list opens. Incomplete applications are dropped.
Keep screenshots and confirmation numbers. Update your address if the PHA requires it or you can be removed.
If you already have a voucher and need to move, ask the PHA about portability before you break a lease. Rules are specific.

Photo ID, Social Security numbers, and who lives in the household
